Neighborhood Development Internship Project, Community Information
This Neighborhood Development Internship Project (NDIP) places college students in paid internships with neighborhood groups working in low-income communities. The purpose is to increase the capacity of neighborhood groups to accomplish community goals, and to encourage students who are interested in community building by giving them a practical, educational experience.

This is a community building initiative, rather than simply a contribution of a student's expertise. The project connects the strengths of individuals, neighborhood groups, companies and institutions to have a positive community impact. Learning is key, with all involved open to learning from each other.

Projects completed by NDIP students include the development of community newsletters and websites , a survey of projects completed by community development corporations, fundraising research, the creation of volunteer recruitment materials and the research for and publication of a Clarkston Healthcare Resource Map.

Basic qualifications for projects to qualify for the NDIP:
  • Be a small nonprofit organization working in a low-income community in the Atlanta area.
  • Have a specific project for an intern which can be completed in 180 hours and in some way stretches what your organization is currently doing. Projects can not be regular staffing needs like answering the telephones or working in a computer lab.
  • Be able to orient a student to your work and community, provide regular supervision and expose a student to the community.
  • Show that neighborhood residents are involved in your organization and are involved in decision-making about their community.

  • If you meet the above qualifications and are interested in learning more about the NDIP, please read the NDIP Community Application and contact Kate Grace to discuss your project needs.

Project descriptions should be submitted no later than one month prior to the beginning of the semester in which you would like to work with a student.
Approximately fifteen students are placed each semester through the NDIP. Students are placed for a single semester. Students work a total of 180 over a semester and receive a stipend at no cost to the host community organization.
