Building Capacity The CHRC was formed in September of 1994 through a collaboration of Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, and the Atlanta Project. It purpose was originally to support and facilitate the work of the affordable housing community in Atlanta, primarily reaching out to those neighborhoods without established community organizations. Now, as we start into the new millennium, Atlanta's community of neighborhood organizations has significantly matured and faces a new set of obstacles. These obstacles arise when a group attempts to move into project implementation. Getting the first few projects underway and developing a track record is a huge step for an organization with a talent for fielding and representing community concerns but little of the capital or construction experience necessary to implement projects. As the Atlanta region has grown and changed, so have the programs and services of the CHRC. The programs of the CHRC are now refocused to both directly impact the deteriorating housing stock and build the implementation capacity of start-up community based movements. The emphasis of our work has thus shifted from organizational support to direct housing construction and construction administration support for Neighborhood based groups. The programs and products of the CHRC are targeted to achieve two Urban Revitalization objectives: Curbing Gentrification and Promoting Mixed Communities. Neighborhood Development Internship Project The scholarship of engagement, or "service learning," is the connection of the rich resources invested in our university system to our most pressing social, civic, and ethical problems. The Neighborhood Internship Development Project (NDIP) is a service learning program that directly connects classroom course work to the daily processes of democracy. The goal of the NDIP is to create innumerable opportunities for students to practice their skills in the service of the real, hard work of citizenship.
Since 1998, the CHRC has facilitated service learning opportunities through the Neighborhood Internship Development Project. In partnership with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and eight local universities, each year the CHRC places 45 university students in internships with grass-roots neighborhood organizations. The community groups need the skills of Georgia's best and brightest and can in turn provide the students with meaningful experience in creating positive change. The NDIP also works to create partnerships with local corporations to lend additional resources, volunteers and expertise to the project.
The NDIP has two main goals: providing a hands-on experience to students, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real life situations, and matching the energy and skills of students to the needs of community organizations. The NDIP students work to expand or improve the current functions of the organization, whether that be completing research for a new program, establishing an accounting system or developing marketing materials for their existing work. Many students continue their work in communities, either as a volunteer or employment after graduation.
Training and Technical Assistance Directory The CHRC, in partnership with the Atlanta Alliance for Community Development Investment and the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership to produce a
