Design for DisAssembly Case Study HomeThe CHRC has dedicated its Design Build Studio to building homes that are healthy for occupants and for the environment. As part of this effort, the Design Build Studio is constructing an environmentally friendly home designed to create zero waste. The home was designed using principles of “Design for DisAssembly” so that in the future, the home can be de-constructed and reused in component parts. The design not only diverts construction waste from the landfill, it actually prevents future demolition waste! Ideas for design for disassembly were generated at a two day conference hosted by the CHRC with the help of a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. The CHRC is working to document and publish the details of this case study home along with the Hamer Center for Community Design at Penn State University. The CHRC will present the home as part of the Building Materials Reuse Association’s 2005 national conference, in November of 2005. This 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home in the historic Martin Luther King Junior District is also available for purchase. Please contact The Design Build Studio for more information. Please join us for an Open House on Saturday, June 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Schaefer Home
At least 95% of homes in the United States are built without an architect. Most people building their own home just can’t
afford the added 8-15% of construction cost associated with design services. The Design Studio recognizes the value that
great design brings to a community as a whole and we offer design packages that meet the needs of clients’ ability to pay.
In the case of the Schaefer home, that meant design services up front, but less involvement in the construction oversight, which the clients were hoping to do on their own. Please visit the Schaefer home website or email the Design Build Studio for more information. 943 Bruce Circle
What would a house look like if we eliminated wall cavities, sheetrock ceilings, interior bearing walls,
and other items that typically create problems as a house grows old and the use patterns change? Our design methodology
focused on eliminating what does not work in the current housing stock. What we end up is an open loft-style dwelling,
that is both affordable, and architecturally compelling.
