   Safe Homes for Seniors

Safe Homes For Seniors is CHRC's first attempt at creating a program which matches a repair person with the home of a senior citizen to assure that the home maintenace issues do not turn deliquent, putting the senior at risk of having to leave the home.

Many of the houses in Atlanta are owned by elderly widows, who have extremely limited incomes. Consequently, for these elderly homeowners, maintenance problems do not get repaired. Many times small repair issues, when not addressed, escalate into a situation that threatens the integrity of the house. The CHRC has spearheaded a partnership with the Adopt A Grandparent Program (AAG) that directly addresses this situation. In the spring of 2002, AAGP began to refer clients to CHRC. Together, representatives from each non-profit visit a home and assess the repairs needed to make the house safe and livable. After the initial intake and repairs, the alliance continues. When problems in the house arise, the homeowner has a place in which to turn. Repair issues are referred from AAG to the CHRC worker, who directly schedules repair projects with the homeowner with whom a relationship has already been established.
